Sometimes the most pleasing things are those found in simplicity. Zebra Vase — and its companion piece Lined Leaves — came from that feeling. A vase. Some branches. A surface to rest on. The oldest subject in drawing, made again.
What interested me was the tension between the two elements: the vase bold and geometric, its thick black stripes decisive and graphic; the botanical above it delicate and patient, each leaf individually rendered in fine hatching that builds texture without weight. One element drawn with confidence. The other with quiet attention. I find that dialogue — between the bold and the delicate, the geometric and the organic — to be where the work lives.
A spin on the traditional still life, drawn in archival ink and watercolour on paper. The watercolour lending atmosphere to what ink alone might have made too stark.
